East Asian Studies allows you to focus on a particular area—history, art history, politics, sociology, religion, language, or transnational issues—in the context of the languages and cultures of East Asia.

At Oxy you have the choice of three majors: East Asian Studies, Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies. East Asian studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to studying the societies and cultures of China, Japan and Korea—and the region as a whole—and the study of an East Asian language is foundational to the major. The Chinese Studies and Japanese studies majors are intended for students primarily interested in language and literature, and much of the coursework is done in Chinese or Japanese. Through these majors you will attain advanced language proficiency in order to explore Chinese or Japanese culture directly through literature, films and study abroad.

With programs in China (including in Beijing, Kunming, Hong Kong, Nanjing, and Shanghai) and Japan (including in Tokyo and Nagoya), you are strongly encouraged to study abroad. You might also pursue summer research opportunities, both on campus and in Asia. Multiple Oxy alumni have been awarded Luce Scholarships for travel and study in Asia after graduation.

Having knowledge of East Asia positions you to better understand today’s world and its complex economic, political, social and environmental challenges. Graduates will be prepared for careers in teaching, linguistics, law, history, international development, foreign service, journalism, translation and international business.

Occidental’s Group Language major allows you to combine the study of either two foreign languages or a language and linguistics.
